Architecture
Over the centuries Hong Kong has played host to everything from Tao temples
and Qing dynasty forts to Victorian churches and Edwardian hotels. But Hong
Kong's ceaseless cycle of deconstruction and reconstruction, up until recently at
least, has meant that the old and charming are often eagerly replaced by modern
marvels, at least in the central parts of the city.
Traditional Chinese
About the only examples of precolonial Chinese architecture left in urban Hong Kong are
Tin Hau temples that date from the early to mid-19th century, including those at Tin Hau
near Causeway Bay and Yau Ma Tei. For anything more substantial, you have to go to the
New Territories, where walled villages, fortresses and ancient pagodas can be seen.
Colonial Architecture
Most of what is left of colonial architecture is on Hong Kong Island, especially in Central,
where the seat of the government is located, though Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon Penin-
sula also boasts quite a few examples. Some of Hong Kong's colonial architecture features
adaptations for the tropical climate, just as some Chinese buildings have Western motifs.
But Hong Kong's examples of hybrid architecture pale in comparison to what is available
in Macau.
Modern Architecture
Enthusiasts of modern architecture will have a field day here. Central and Wan Chai on
Hong Kong Island are especially rich showcases for the modern and contemporary build-
ings - many designed by internationally celebrated architects such as Norman Foster and
IM Pei.
