Wholesale District (Sheung Wan)
The Walk
Sheung Wan became a trading hub in the mid-19th century, when turmoil in China caused
many Chinese businessmen, notably from Chaozhou (Chiu Chow) in Guangdong province,
to flee to the territory. With their capital, they set up businesses in Sheung Wan, trading in
dried seafood, Chinese herbs and rice. Not everyone who arrived was rich though. The ma-
jority worked as coolies at the piers. As more and more migrants came, the area around Tai
Ping Shan St became the heart of the Chinese community, with its own places of worship
and funeral parlours. Sheung Wan was also tied to Sun Yat-sen, aka 'Father of Modern Ch-
ina', who went to school as a teenager here and, later, held secret meetings as a revolution-
ary.
