In-Depth Information
market was used as a mortuary by Japanese forces in WWII. The pocket-sized Old Wan
Chai Post Office ( Click here ) is Hong Kong's oldest.
Spring Garden Lane
Cross the road to take a look at Spring Garden Lane , one of the first areas developed by
the British. A British merchant had a lavish residence here named Spring Gardens, and
Spring Garden Lane was the length between its north and south gates. In the 1900s, the
lane harboured many brothels.
Ghost House
Come back to the southern side of Queen's Rd East. Peep inside mysterious Hung Shing
Temple ( Click here ) , once a seaside shrine. Just west of the temple turn up the hill along
Ship St and stand before the now-derelict Ghost House at 55 Nam Koo Terrace. Its his-
tory is a wretched one: it was used by Japanese soldiers as a brothel housing 'comfort wo-
men' in WWII.
Star Street
Star St neighbourhood is a quiet corner that contains the old - including a family-run dai
pai dong (hawker-style food stall) on St Francis St - and the new - quaint boutiques, cafes
and restaurants. Just above Classified Mozzarella Bar ( Click here ) is a six-storey bal-
conied building in art-deco style. At the junction of Wing Fung St and Queen's Rd East
you'll see a building with signage to the Admiralty MTR station just under it.
