Wan Chai's Forgotten Streets
The Walk
Wan Chai's old coastline used to run near the tram tracks on Johnston Rd before zealous
land reclamation pushed the shoreline to the north. During that time, the area around
Queen's Rd East and Johnston Rd was a small fishing village with shrines and temples
overlooking the sea. After the British came, shipyards were built along the bay and
'second-rank' Europeans who could not afford to live on Victoria Peak made their homes
on the hills south of Queen's Rd East. Now that area still contains some of Wan Chai's
most exclusive real estate. Though new Wan Chai is an exciting commercial district with
gleaming skyscrapers and five-star hotels, for those keen on exploration, the south side of
the (tram) tracks will always be more interesting.
