Macau's oldest temple (1488) is named after the goddess of the sea, better known as Tin
Hau. It was probably standing when the Portuguese arrived, although the present building
may only date back to the 17th century. At the entrance is a large boulder with a coloured
relief of a lorcha, a traditional sailing vessel of the South China Sea. (Templo de A-Ma; Rua de
São Tiago da Barra; admission free;

Macau's Sword Master
The charismatic Antonio Conceição Junior ( www.arscives.com/bladesign ; antonio.cejunior@gmail.com) is Ma-
cau's best-known designer. He has a vast repertoire spanning Macau postage stamps, fashion, jewellery, medallions
and book covers.
Antonio also designs custom swords inspired by Macanese and ancient cultures, mythology and the modern
world - both Eastern ( katana and tantō ) and Western (sabres and cutlasses) blades, as well as hybrids.
Antonio can recommend bladesmiths in North America to manufacture and ship the swords. Email him for en-
quiries; expect about one to two weeks for the completed design and a fee of about US$3000.
