Taipa Village
Take bus 22, 26 or 33 to get to this village in the south of the island, where the histor-
ical part of Taipa is best preserved. With a tidy sprawl of traditional Chinese shops
and some excellent restaurants, the village is punctuated by grand colonial villas,
churches and ancient temples. Avenida da Praia, a tree-lined esplanade with wrought-
iron benches, is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Museum of Taipa & Coloane History
This museum (Museu da História da Taipa e Coloane; Rua Correia da Silva; adult/student & senior MOP$5/
2, free Tue; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun) in the village has a display of excavated relics and other
artefacts on the 1st floor, while the 2nd floor contains religious objects, handicrafts
and architectural models.
Pak Tai Temple
Sitting quietly in a leafy square in the village is this temple ( Templo Pak Tai; Rua do
Regedor) , built in 1844 and dedicated to the Taoist god of the north. A pair of Chinese
lions guards the entrance to the temple.
Taipa House Museum
Further afield, the pastel-toned villas (Casa Museum da Taipa; Avenida da Praia; adult/student
MOP$5/3, free Tue; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun) here were once the summer residences of middle-
class Macanese; now they're museums showcasing Portuguese traditions, Macau's
traditional industries and local life in the early 20th century.
Chapel of St Francis Xavier
Head to Coloane by bus 21A from the bus stop on Estrada Governador Nobre de
Carvalho, and alight at Coloane Village. The highlight here is this quirky chapel
(Capela de São Francisco Xavier; Avenida de Cinco de Outubro;
