Ruins of the Church of St Paul
Essentially a magnificent gate to nowhere, the ruins of the
Church of St Paul are Macau's most treasured icon. Once
part of a Jesuit church, it was designed by an Italian and
built by exiled Japanese Christians and Chinese craftsmen
in 1602. However, due to a fire in 1835, all that remains is
its weathered facade and majestic stairway. Yet with its sur-
viving statues, portals and engravings - what has been
called a 'sermon in stone' - some still consider it to be the
greatest monument to Christianity in Asia.
