Victorian Roots
Hong Kong's two racecourses, Happy Valley Racecourse ( Click here ) and Sha Tin Racecourse, are operated by
the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). The HKJC is a recreation club that was started in the 19th century by
Europeans who wanted to maintain their old lifestyle while living in Asia. They imported stallions from Mongo-
lia and rode them themselves. The earliest races were annual affairs that any expat who was anyone at all would
attend, including ladies. Nowadays weekly meetings are held at the racecourses.
