The dumplings, noodles and other Shanghainese classics at this famous Taiwanese chain
can be anyone's comfort food. There's always a line at the door and it doesn't take reser-
vations; it's best to go in the afternoon. ( www.dintaifung.com.tw ; shop 130, 3rd fl, 30 Canton Rd;

Gaddi's $$$
FRENCH
Gaddi's, which opened just after WWII at the Peninsula Hotel (see 8 , C3), was for a
long time a place where wealthy families celebrated special occasions. Today the classical
decor may be a tad stuffy, the live Filipino band gratuitous, but the food - traditional
French with contemporary touches -is, without a doubt, still among the best in town. (

15 T'ang Court $$$
CANTONESE

As befitting a restaurant named after China's greatest dynasty, T'ang Court has raised its
speciality, Cantonese cooking, to an art. The atmosphere is plush and hushed, with deep-
pile carpets and heavy silks, and the only noise you'll hear is yourself talking. If that
seems too formal, rest assured, the service will make you feel right at home, like an em-
peror in his palace. (

Hong Kong's most famous Peking duck is served here and the roast lamb is impressive,
but the service can be about as welcoming as a Beijing winter, circa 1967. Spring Deer
comes recommended by Michelin inspectors. Booking essential. (
