Hole in the Soul
Repulse Bay (see Local Life, Click here ) is surrounded by swanky high-rise apartment blocks. Among them is a
giant pink, blue and yellow wavy structure with a giant square hole in the middle. Apparently this design feature
was added on the advice of a feng shui expert. 'Chi', or energy flowing over mountains, is sometimes called a
'mountain dragon', and its course is called a 'dragon's vein'. Not all mountains have dragon's veins, but appar-
ently this one does. And if it wasn't for the hole, the building would block the downward flow of this precious
energy to the water, which would bring bad luck to the entire neighbourhood.

The larger of two floating restaurants, the Jumbo resembles the Imperial Palace crossbred
with a casino (well, it is owned by a Macau casino mogul) - so kitsch that it's fun. That
said, the dim sum and the Cantonese dishes are definitely authentic. If the interiors look
familiar, it could be you've seen the film Contagion (2011) in which Gwyneth Paltrow at-
tended a banquet here. Free transport to the restaurant is available from Aberdeen Prom-
enade. (

This beautiful replica of a colonial building has wooden ceiling fans, potted palms and a
sea-facing outlook; all lend a tropical feel. It's hushed and formal, with heavy white table-
cloths and demurely clinking cutlery. The new marble staircase with wooden banisters
will make professionals of the most inexperienced photographers. Verandah is famous for
its afternoon tea, which is easily the south side's best. (
