Vickie's Angry Uncles
Victoria Park is associated with freedom of expression, due to the candlelight vigil that takes place on 4 June to
commemorate the crackdown on democracy protests in China, and also due to the current-affairs debate 'City
Forum' (noon to 1pm) that turns it into a mini Hyde Park every Sunday. During the show, a group of retired,
pro-Communist old men - regulars of the park - will holler against speechifying prodemocracy politicians to
drown them out. These men came to be known as the Uncles of Victoria Park, but the term has since evolved to
include any old man with a gripe.

Built in 1901, this recoil-mounted cannon, which is fired at noon every day, is one of the
few vestiges of the colonial past in Causeway Bay. It's accessible via a tunnel through the
basement car park in the World Trade Centre, just west of the Excelsior Hotel. From the
taxi rank in front of the hotel, look west for the door marked 'Car Park Shroff, Marina
Club & Noon Gun'. (221 Gloucester Rd;

Victoria Park is the biggest patch of public greenery on Hong Kong Island. The best time
to go is on a weekday morning, when it becomes a forest of people practising the slow-
motion choreography of taichi. The park turns into a flower market a few days before the
Chinese New Year. On Sunday, Indonesian domestic helpers gather here to pray, eat and
socialise. ( www.lcsd.gov.hk/en/ls_park.php ; Causeway Rd;
