Getting Around
Up to 2014, public transport within the city was provided entirely by buses; the two main
operators are Lothian Buses ( www.lothianbuses.com ) , which runs most of the city routes,
and First Edinburgh ( www.firstedinburgh.co.uk ) , with buses mainly serving the towns and
villages around Edinburgh. From 2014 a brand-new tram line ( www.edinburghtrams.com )
will be running from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre.
Bus
The bus network is extensive and is the best way of getting from the suburbs to the centre,
and for north-south trips. Despite dedicated bus lanes, buses can get held up in traffic dur-
ing rush hours.
Tram
Fast and frequent (every 10 to 12 minutes) service from the airport to York Place in the east
of the city centre, via Murrayfield Stadium, Haymarket, the West End and Princes St.
Taxi
Friendly and knowledgeable drivers, great for late-night journeys, but fares can be expens-
ive unless there are four people sharing.
Bicycle
Great for leisure - hire a bike and escape to the countryside via the Water of Leith Walk-
way, or the Union Canal towpath.
