Understand
Water of Leith
Edinburgh's river is a modest stream, flowing only 20 miles from the northwestern slopes of the
Pentland Hills to enter the Firth of Forth at Leith. It cuts a surprisingly rural swathe through the
city, providing an important wildlife habitat (you can occasionally see otters and kingfishers) and
offering the chance to stroll along wooded riverbanks only 500m from Princes St. The Water of
Leith Walkway offers an almost uninterrupted 12-mile walking and cycling route along the river
from Leith via Stockbridge and Dean Village to Balerno, on the southwestern edge of the city.
