In-Depth Information
St Bernard's Well
A short walk along the Water of Leith Walkway leads to St Bernard's Well (
noon-3pm Sun, Aug only) , a circular temple with a statue of Hygeia, the goddess of
health, built in 1789. The sulphurous spring was discovered by schoolboys from Ge-
orge Heriot's School in 1760, and became hugely popular during the late-18th-cen-
tury fad for 'taking the waters' - one visitor compared the taste to 'the washings of
foul gun barrels'.
Ann Street
The Georgian garden villas along Ann St (named after Sir Henry Raeburn's wife) are
among the most beautiful and desirable houses in Edinburgh. The street is reckoned
to be the most expensive in the city, and was named in 2008 as one of the UK's six
most exclusive streets. It is also the setting for JM Barrie's 1902 novel Quality Street .
Raeburn Place
Stockbridge's main drag is a bustle of shops, pubs and restaurants, with everything
from chain stores and charity shops to craft shops, galleries and jewellery boutiques.
Stockbridge Market
On Sundays, Stockbridge Market ( www.stockbridgemarket.com; cnr Kerr St & Saunders
St; 10am-5pm Sun) is the focus of the community, set in a leafy square next to the
bridge that gives the district its name. Stalls range from fresh Scottish produce to
handmade ceramics, jewellery, soaps and cosmetics. Grab an espresso from Steam-
punk Coffee, which operates out of a 1970s VW campervan.
