Walk into any bookshop in Edinburgh and you'll find a healthy 'Scottish Fiction' section, its
shelves bulging with recently published works by best-selling Edinburgh authors such as Iain
Banks, Christopher Brookmyre, Ian Rankin, Alexander McCall Smith and Irvine Welsh.
Ian Rankin's Rebus novels are dark, engrossing mysteries that explore the darker side of Scot-
land's capital city, filled with sharp dialogue, telling detail and three-dimensional characters.
Although she was born in Bristol, the publishing phenomenon that is JK Rowling famously
began her career by penning the first Harry Potter adventure while nursing a coffee in various Ed-
inburgh cafes; she still lives in the city.
