Palace of Holyroodhouse
This palace is the royal family's official residence in Scot-
land, serving as a home from home when the queen is visit-
ing Edinburgh. But it is probably more famous as the 16th-
century home of the ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots, who
spent six turbulent years here (1561-67), during which
time she debated with John Knox, married both her first
and second husbands, and witnessed the murder of her sec-
retary (and rumoured lover) David Rizzio.
