Summit, preliminary negotiations in New York at UN headquarters found
the United States participating but seeking a less stringent draft of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The United States has followed news of events around the world (although
having a preference for those that speak English). The 1952 Great Smog in
London garnered more publicity than domestic tragedies. The Clean Air
Act copied language from the British law. The Environmental Decade of
the 1970s unfolded parallel to that in Europe. Jacques Cousteau's films and
topics of underwater exploration were popular. he United States made
numerous contributions to other countries. The idea of national parks
started with Yellowstone and was soon copied in Australia and Canada.
The creation of EPA in 1970 inspired similar agencies in other countries.
