garden. Early European travelers to China in 1685 and again in 1738 were
impressed with its naturalistic style, and soon sent drawings and dia-
grams to England. English gardeners planted in this fashion, and the idea
spread to Germany, France, and the Thirteen Colonies. A more impor-
tant precursor was the Romantic Movement starting about 1790, whereby
Europeans fell in love with nature, celebrating it in song and in poem.
