In-Depth Information
There are a number of other less-comfortable cargo boats that make the Bluefields run
and there is usually always at least one departure on Sunday nights. Bring a hammock or
you will be trying to get comfortable on the cold steel deck.
Getting Around
Taxis cost US$0.65 per person (US$0.85 at night) to anywhere on the island. During the
day, there is one bus (US$0.20) that continuously runs the circuit, but you might wait a
while until it passes.
Rentals are a great way to explore the island. Casa Canada rents bicycles for US$3 per
hour. Corn Island Car Rental ( 8643-9881, 2575-5222; cornislandcarentals@hotmail.com) of-
fers motorbike (US$45 to US$50 per day) and golf-cart (US$45 to US$55 per day) rent-
als. Sweet Little Rock Rentals (
8942-1605; South End) has scooters for US$30 per day.
Little Corn Island
POP 500
This jade isleta is a dreamy escape with imaginative bungalow properties encamped on
otherwise virgin beaches. Even if cars were allowed (which they aren't), they wouldn't be
able to maneuver the thin concrete and muddy jungle paths that wind beneath the mango,
coconut and breadfruit trees, and into the thick forest that buffers the northern and eastern
coasts. The northern end of the island is the most secluded, has the best beaches and is the
perfect setting for your Crusoe homage. Locals live, drink, dine, shoot pool and dance in
the Village, which is set on a serene harbor sheltered from the north winds. The rugged,
windy eastern coast makes for a transcendent afternoon of beachcombing: gorgeous
white-sand beaches are framed by boulders, driftwood, headlands and coconut groves.
