houses the most important collection of stelae in the country, with more than 120 basalt
statues, carved between AD 800 and 1500, including La Chinita, known as 'The Mona
Lisa of Chontales.' She too has appeared at the Louvre. Inside the museum are hundreds
of pre-Columbian pots, incense burners, funeral jars, art objects and the largest metate
(corn grinder) ever found.
Parque Central
The central plaza is constantly buzzing with man gossip thanks to the steady stream of
ranchers who come to get their boots shined next to La Lustrador, the beloved statue of a
shoe-shine boy. El Templo de Cultura , the large gazebo in the center, occasionally hosts
live music and poetry readings.

Palo Solo Park
(Parque Central, 5c E) This shady park is where couples come to whisper, cuddle and kiss
beneath palm and ficus trees, and absorb a truly magnificent view of the Serranía Amer-
risque.
Pozo el Salto
This absolutely stunning, partially dammed swimming hole, 4km north of town on the
road to Managua, is framed in cascades of water and has been popular with picnickers for
generations; unfortunately it's often polluted so ask around before diving in. It's a US$2
taxi or US$0.30 bus ride away.

Festivals & Events
Juigalpa's fiestas patronales , held from August 11 to 18, are internationally known for
their hipícas (horse parades and rodeos). This is the only time of year you'll need to book
your room in advance. The party's beating heart is Juigalpa's Plaza Taurina Chontales (ad-
mission US$2.50-4) , a rodeo venue that hosts events and shows throughout the year.
