Eating
Before the canyon, Somoto was famous for rosquillas, crusty cornbread rings, baked with
cheese and herbs, and served with black coffee (go ahead, dunk 'em). You can buy a bag
anywhere, but those in the know say the best are found at Rosquillas Vílchez-Tinoco (
2722-0745; Enitel 1c E, 7½c S) .
Carne Asada El Buen Gusto
(Frente Intae; mains US$3; noon-10pm, closed Sun) Pull up a handcrafted wooden stool and
dine under the traditional pottery hanging from the ceiling in this popular grill restaurant
west of parque central. There are your standard fritanga options as well as a variety of
typical regional plates and great refrescos naturales (made from local fruits, herbs and
seeds blended with water and sugar and poured over ice).
NICARAGUAN $
Bar y Restaurant El Almendro
( 2722-2152; Parque Central, 2c S; mains US$7-9; noon-10pm) This bar-room restaurant
feels like something from the Wild West, but the food is actually pretty good. Choose
from fish, chicken or beef in a variety of sauces served with all the usual extras.
