name of the wave is Boom-wavos, and it's worth checking Hotel Chancletas' website to
see it for yourself. There's also a left five minutes offshore and a few other good breaks
around. Chancletas offers fishing tours (US$120, four hours), kayak tours (US$30, six
hours), surf-board rentals (per day US$15), and horses (US$20) and bikes (US$6).

the famed Boom-wavos break is a surfers' spot with shared rooms that may have some
mysterious animal droppings on the sheets, and nice upscale rooms.
Marina Puesta del Sol ( 8880-0019; www.marinapuestadelsol.com ; r incl breakfast from
US$200; ) , at the end of the road before the estuary, is a very upmarket yacht
club offering great views of smoking San Cristóbal from the infinity pool, and even better
ones from the enormous, fully equipped rooms. It has a beach basically all to itself on the
other side of the hill.
Buses here from Chinandega depart at 2:30pm and 4pm, and leave for Chinandega at
5am and 7:45am (US$1, 1½ hours).
GETTING TO EL SALVADOR
There are plans to open a ferry port in Potosí (some say as early as 2015) for transfers to La Un-
ión in El Salvador and perhaps to Honduras. For now, you can do it by hiring a boat (1½ hours)
with Ecodetur ( Click here ) for US$35 per person, with a six-person minimum. There's a passport
checkpoint in both Potosí and La Unión (open daily 8am to 5:30pm).
Playa Jiquilillo
This endless pale-gray beach (pronounced heekeeleeyo ) frames what you thought existed
only in tales that begin 'You should have seen it back when I was first here…' The
picture-perfect fishing village fronts a dramatic rocky point, where tide pools reflect the
reds and golds of a huge setting sun, Cosigüina's ragged bulk rising hazy and postapoca-
lyptic to the north. The region remains largely undeveloped, despite its beauty and access-
ibility, because a devastating 1992 tsunami wiped this village out completely.
And the beach is perfect. There's no real rip current in the calm cove. Just beyond is a
good river-mouth break, with regular peaks where you can almost always carve out a few
