Hotel Yeland
( 2312-2256; hotelyelandpto@yahoo.es; s/d US$35/50; ) For the one place to stay
in town, this is actually pretty good, with big, clean rooms in a modern house. A great res-
taurant is attached. Surfing, snorkeling and (with plenty of notice) dive trips can be organ-
ized here.

Restaurante Chango
(opposite Yeland Hotel; mains US$4-12; lunch & dinner) This humble eatery serves all your
faves, including fresh fish, shrimp and, if you're lucky, rondon, a slow-cooked seafood
stew.
NICARAGUAN $$
El Centro Turístico El Velero
This early Sandanista tourist compound with a wonderful beach, broken-down and aban-
doned buildings, and no one for miles makes for a fun day-trip from León or Puerto
Sandino. From the entrance to Puerto Sandino, you get here on a dirt road heading south
for a couple of kilometers. Occasionally buses or trucks ply this route for around
US$0.50. Once you get to the gate, just ask for permission to go in - it generally allows
day visitors.
Currently, all of the restaurants and corrugated-roof cabins here have been abandoned,
but you never know, this may be the next Mc-Disney-Sandinista-Land.
El Tránsito
This little fishing village on the coast between León and Managua sits on a near-perfect
crescent bay. The sand is blacker here, due to volcanic residue. The beach, while not ex-
actly dirty, could certainly be cleaner and there's a strong undertow, but to the south, near
the lava flows, there are protected swimming holes. You may be able to arrange a
homestay in the village, and there are a few basic beachfront restaurants.
The arts center, El Transito Centro de Artes (ETCA; www.eltransitoarts.com ) , has ongoing
volunteer ops. Directions here are online.
