In-Depth Information
Beaches North of San Juan del Sur
If you're taking the bus out to these beaches, bear in mind that there'll be at least a 2km
walk from the bus stop to the water. Hitching is common (but traffic isn't), though you
can always put a bike on top of the bus and do it that way.
Playa Nacascolo
Although access to Playa Nacascolo is privately owned, cooler than average Nicaragua
Properties ( www.realestatenicaragua.com ) actually allows visitors onto the property to cross
(for now); ask at the entrance and guards will give you directions to Las Miradores water-
fall.
Playa Marsella
This beautiful beach lies about 9km north of San Juan del Sur. The water is calm and it
makes for a good swimming spot. Although the best surfing is just north, at Playa Mader-
as (go back out to the road; you can't walk around the point), there's a good estuary break
right here.
Sleeping & Eating
Hotel Villa Mar
( 8392-1225; hotel.villamar@hotmail.com; r US$80; ) This is across the road from the
estuary, close enough to the beach for you to get rocked to sleep by the sound of crashing
waves - ask for a room out front. Rooms are plain but comfortable with cool tiled floors.
Check at the restaurant for area tours.

Pacific Bay Hotel
( 8251-5728; www.pacificbayhotel.com ; entrance to town; d US$87-150, apt US$315;
) As you descend into town, this resort-style hotel on the hillside is hard to miss. It has
excellent views of the bay below from most of the hotel (though only a few rooms actu-
ally give you wake-up calls of rolling waves). The cozy, well-appointed rooms have all
the conveniences you could ask for, and the pool is incredible!
