In-Depth Information
set in a rickety old wooden farmhouse and could be prettied up a bit, but really - who
cares?
With sweeping views of the lake and Volcán Concepción, lush surrounds and yummy
meals made from organic produce grown on the spot, you can probably rough it for a few
days. And if you can't, the
cabinas
are several steps up in comfort. Note that it's a 1.5km
climb to the
finca
from the bus stop.

At the southern
end of town is a sweet little family-run affair offering basic but functional rooms. The best
part is the 50m jungle trail that leads down to a pebble beach, complete with
rancho
(thatched-roof open-air bungalow), just waiting for you to string your hammock and pop
your
cerveza
(beer).

The Totoco has seven
cabinas
perched high above the beach on a large
6.5-hectare organic farm (where you can volunteer). It works on solar power, recycles
grey water and even has composting toilets. And while some lux-set travelers may miss
air-con, the romantic rooms with spectacular views of Volcán Concepción and Tarzan-
meet-Jane stylings are the best on the island.
Profits go to local initiatives, and there's a beautiful pool with views from here to etern-
ity. We only wish it was closer to the beach. The restaurant is a worthwhile stop for
nonguests.
