CHARCO VERDE & ISLA DE QUISTE
On the southern side of ConcepciĆ³n lies a lush, less-windblown clutch of beaches,
centered on Reserva Charco Verde OFFLINE MAP ( www.fincasverdes.com ; admission US$0.75) .
The fine green Laguna Charco Verde is accessible from a short hiking trail that begins at
Hotel Charco Verde. Not only is this a lovely spot for swimming, hiking and wildlife-
watching, but it's also it's the home of Chico Largo, a tall, thin and ancient witch who of-
ten appears swimming or fishing in the lagoon. His primary duty is to protect the tomb
and solid-gold throne of Cacique Nicarao, buried nearby.
Just offshore, Isla de Quiste is within swimming distance of the beach, or any of the
area's hotels can arrange boat service and perhaps rental tents, as it's a prime camping,
fishing and birding spot.

Hotel Finca Playa Venecia
OFFLINE MAP
( 8887-0191; www.fincavenecia.com ; cabins with fan/air-con US$30/45; ) A decent
bet on this side of the island, this grouping of 20 cabinas and four basic rooms sits near
the beach, and has a grassy play area for the tots. Unfortunately, not many of the cabinas
have lake-front views, and they can be slightly stale, but air out quickly.

Hotel El Tesoro de Pirata
OFFLINE MAP
( 8927-2831; tesoroelpirata@gmail.com; d US$35; ) Two kilometers to the south of
Charco Verde is the turnoff to Valle Verde (Green Valley). It's another 2km walk from the
bus stop down to the Pirate's Treasure Hotel. This is the best beach around, a private la-
goon all of your own. The rooms aren't anything to write home about, but for the price,
this is an excellent option on this side of the island.
