In-Depth Information
The building itself, Hacienda Ursula, is an 18th-century architectural treasure and the
site of William Walker's decisive defeat. After his troops, limping home following an em-
barrassing rout by the Costa Rican military, took control of the hacienda, school teacher
Emmanuel Mongalo y Rubio set the fortress on fire. Most of the men were shot or cap-
tured as they fled the burning building.

(Parque Central) This 1863 church on the eastern side of Parque Central is worth a look for
its attractive classical facade. There's a kick-ass fresco in the cupola showing a battle at
sea. Communism, Protestantism and secularism are the burning hulks, while the victori-
ous ship entering the harbor is the SS Catholicism.

The best hotel in town has button-down business-style rooms, mustard-colored bedspreads
and cable TV in a quasi-hacienda-style setting. The restaurant out front is a good deal, but
the lack of a swimming pool is puzzling.
