ESCAPE THE CHAOS IN MANAGUA'S GREEN SPACES
Tired of honking horns, screeching hawkers, pollution and litter? Take an afternoon breather in
one of Managua's green areas. For your safety, only visit park areas during the day.
Japanese park, nestled in the back blocks of the Metrocentro area, is a great place for a bit of time
out - there are plenty of trees, some walking tracks and a couple of good playgrounds to keep the
kids happy.
of blocks from Martha Quezada's concrete jungle, this surprisingly pretty park is a little slice of
suburbia, with kids riding bikes, a playground, and a kiosk selling snacks and cold drinks. The
park is surrounded by some fairly opulent homes, including that of President Ortega - if your taxi
driver doesn't know it, tell him '
donde vive Daniel'
(where Daniel lives).
Parque Las Palmas
(Estatua de Montoya, 3c O, 50m N) A cute and shady little neighborhood
park with the requisite benches, snack kiosks and even a laid-back bar in the middle.
Parque Las Piedrecitas
(Carretera Sur, Km 6) Although it packs out on weekends with family
groups, midweek this park on the western edge of the city is a slice of tranquility. There are great
views of nearby Laguna Asososca, and very average food available at the kiosk - bring a picnic.
Any bus heading along the Carr Sur toward Jinotepe can drop you at the entrance. Taxis charge
about US$2.50 per person.
