Plaza de la Revolución & El Malecón
This quiet collection of pre-earthquake and post-revolutionary monuments, parks, mu-
seums and government offices was once the pulsing heart of Managua; the
malecón
(pier),
a pleasant stroll from the Plaza de la Revolución, once overlooked a living lake lined with
restaurants and festivities. Then came the 1972 earthquake, and two decades of war and
privation, and the center was all but abandoned.
But slowly - little by little, as they say in Nicaragua - it is being resuscitated. Govern-
ment buildings have been rebuilt and trees replanted, and ramshackle restaurants once
again host cheerful after-church crowds on the lakefront.
