In-Depth Information
items, look at the map before leaving your hotel/restaurant, carry only as much money as
you're realistically going to need for the day, money belts go INSIDE your clothing, don't
wander around drunk alone at night, and if you get lost, hail a cab.
It's fairly obvious which neighborhoods to avoid (and there's no real reason to go there,
anyway), but if you do find yourself surrounded by abandoned houses and tattooed guys
hanging out on street corners, turn around and go back the way you came.
The Barrio Martha Quezada has a particularly bad rep. It's fine in the daytime but gets
sketchy at night, particularly on the unlit streets leading to the Plaza Inter mall. The neigh-
borhood gets progressively worse the further north you go past Calle 27 de Mayo, and this
area should be avoided day and night.
Sights & Activities
Managua's sights are few and, with the exception of the often deserted Área Monumental,
far between. Taxis are a cheap and worthwhile investment in Managua's muggy climate.

1 Barrio Martha Quezada & Around
Since the days of the internacionalistas (idealistic visitors who came during the revolu-
tionary years in the 1980s), Barrio Martha Quezada has been the city's budget-travel
headquarters. It has easy access to Plaza Inter Mall and most international buses. Better to
take a cab here at night.
