In-Depth Information
An early example of a tough Portland woman, Esther Lovejoy got a medical
degree at the University of Oregon in 1894, graduating with honors. She mar-
ried and had a son with a fellow med-school student, but both the son and the
husband had died by 1911. Esther went on to marry a local businessman, Ge-
orge Lovejoy, but they were divorced in 1920. Before all of that, though, Port-
land's mayor appointed Esther to the city board of health. Two years later she
became city health officer, the first woman to have such a major civic role in
any large US city. She made it a priority to crack down on poor hygiene, par-
ticularly in schools and in terms of the city's garbage-collection practices, and
she emphasized good-quality food and milk. She was also a fierce advocate
for women's right to control their own lives; among other things, this included
advocating for the right to vote. Oregon women achieved suffrage in 1912,
but Esther didn't stop there; she continued to organize and fight for the right
to vote on a national level. She wrote and published several books about the
history of women in medicine. She also worked for public health improve-
ments in poor and neglected areas overseas. She served as director of the in-
ternational relief organization American Women's Hospitals from 1919 until
she died in 1967.
