In-Depth Information
SE Bybee Blvd. until it meets SE Milwaukie Ave. (at which point those
so inclined may want to duck half a block right for another antiques
powerhouse, Stars Antiques Mall). Turn left on Milwaukie Ave. to walk
through the tiny heart of Sellwood.
One of Portland's handful of historic single-screen movie houses, the
Moreland Theater (1926), is on the right. Look for the Johnson Jewelers
clock, a familiar landmark, out front.
Continuing along SE Milwaukie Ave., you'll find plenty of chances for
refreshment, but wait until you reach the yin-yang duo that is Papa
Haydn and the Yukon Tavern. The former is a delightfully upscale res-
taurant known for its desserts, with a lovely outdoor garden in the
warmer months; the Yukon, on the other hand, is an excellent dive with
faded red-velvet walls, cheap drinks, and ancient regulars glued to their
disintegrating barstools. You really can't lose either way.
The final stretch of SE Milwaukie Ave. leading back to the Oaks Bottom
parking lot features one of Sellwood's oddest mysteries: Keana's
Candyland, an inexplicably unsettling gingerbread house encrusted
with plastic candy canes, outsize lollipops, Christmas lights, and hand-
drawn signs that beckon you in, Hansel and Gretel-like, past the white
picket fence. It's allegedly just a bakery and candy shop, but those who
fear unicorns and magic are advised to approach with caution.
Continue another 100 meters or so along SE Milwaukie Ave. to reach
the Oaks Bottom parking lot.
