In-Depth Information
homes suddenly had nowhere to live; many of them settled in North and
Northeast Portland, establishing what was to become the heart of Port-
land's black community.
At the river, cross N. Marine Dr. and turn right. (The land you see
across the water is Hayden Island, home to the Jantzen Beach shopping
area and, to the west, a lot of undeveloped land that may soon be an-
nexed to Portland. The debate over what to do with the west side of
Hayden Island has been referred to in local press as a “land grab,” and
it seems an ugly fight may be in store.) You are now walking parallel to
the Oregon section of the Columbia River (the Washington state line is
on the other side of Hayden Island). Follow the trail along the water's
edge until it curves back in toward N. Marine Dr. (also known as N.
Swift Hwy. and OR 120).
At the stoplight where N. Marine Dr. meets NE Martin Luther King Jr.
Blvd., cross Marine Dr., then turn right (heading back in the direction
you came from) about 100 meters until you see on your left the walkway
to the Portland Expo Center MAX Station. Follow this curved path to
the station, where the Yellow Line will take you back into town.
