and eyes, adorable terrariums, etchings, mysterious items in jars, and,
of course, the odd gardening implement. Definitely worth a look
around, and the interior of the store itself is beautiful too.
At N. Prescott St., Mississippi kinks to the right and becomes N. Albina
Ave. Make your way along Albina for several blocks until you reach N.
Killingsworth St.; turn right on Killingsworth.
Just past N. Commercial Ave. on Killingsworth St. is a very turquoise
dive bar called The Florida Room, famous for its Bloody Marys. Across
the street is the Chapel Pub, a cute little building originally from 1932,
now yet another in the string of drinkeries in repurposed buildings
owned by the local McMenamins chain.
Back on the other side of the street is the North Portland branch of the
county library—originally the Carnegie Library, built in 1913. It was
restored in 1999 and looks fantastic inside and out.
At the corner of NE Killingsworth St. and N. Williams Ave. are a pair of
shops whose customer overlap would be interesting to study: first
there's In Other Words, a feminist bookstore that's been skewered on
Portlandia, and then next door is the Record Room, an indie record
store where you can enjoy beer, wine, coffee, and pinball while you
browse through the new and used LPs and cassingles. If it hasn't
already had its 15 minutes of Portlandia fame, it surely will in the very
near future.
Retrace your steps to N. Albina Ave., then catch Bus 4 back toward the
city center and your starting point.
