In-Depth Information
back to NW Couch. These blocks contain some of the grittier street life
in the area, as well as some of the more memorable old buildings.
Follow Couch to NW Naito Pkwy., and turn right. From here you have
an interesting view of the White Stag sign, a beloved local landmark
and yet another beneficiary of the Old Town preservationist spirit. (It's
been changed several times to suit whichever business was using it to
advertise, but the sign has now essentially been adopted by Old Town
and should be safe. The large warehouse building beneath it is an ex-
ample of the kind of restoration going on in this neighborhood.)
Turn right at SW Ankeny St., where you'll see the Skidmore Fountain
and Ankeny Arcade. The fountain is from 1888 and was intended for
“horses, men, and dogs,” but … drink at your own risk. This area is
part of the grounds of Portland's Saturday Market, which we'll cover in
Walk 10: Hawthorne Bridge to Steel Bridge .
Continue straight ahead on SW Ankeny St. and you'll come to an alley-
way shared by several bars in the block. Here again, drink at your own
risk—but this is a fun and lively warm-weather hangout, and the sur-
rounding bars are all worth investigating if it's too cold for sitting out-
doors. At the corner of Ankeny and SW 3rd Ave. is the tourist favorite
Voodoo Doughnut, which will most likely have a huge line outside. Go
ahead—we'll be in the alley.
