In-Depth Information
Pirate's Cove makes for a nice contrast with our next stop; luckily,
you'll have plenty of time to walk off the sleaze before we get there.
Continue up Sandy Blvd. for several blocks (noting, on your left at NE
80th Ave., the Park City Pub—this was once the steakhouse with the
best name of any steakhouse ever: Sir Loins). Cross NE 82nd Ave. and
continue a few more blocks until you see the entrance to The Grotto on
your right (at about NE 85th Ave.). Go on in and follow signs to the vis-
itors' entrance.
Officially called The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Moth-
er—you can see why the shorter moniker caught on—it's a 62-acre
botanical garden surrounding a Catholic shrine. The actual grotto is a
rock cave that was carved into the base of a hundred-foot cliff in 1923,
with a replica of Michelangelo's Pietà nestled within it. Surrounding
this are gardens on two levels, one of which is accessible by elevator
(there's a fee for the lift, though). Wandering around The Grotto is a
possibly disorienting experience for anyone coming directly from a walk
down Sandy Blvd., but it's a quiet and calming pocket of nature and, if
nothing else, a vivid juxtaposition.
To return to your starting point, simply cross to the other side of Sandy
Blvd. outside the entrance to The Grotto; you can catch TriMet Bus 12
at Sandy and NE 68th Ave.
