BACK STORY: GRINDHOUSE FILM
FESTIVAL
One of the coolest things about the Hollywood Theater is the Grindhouse
Film Festival, which (though it started as an annual festival) is now an ongo-
ing year-round series programmed by Dan Halsted, one of the Hollywood
Theatre's programmers. Halsted has a vast collection of obscure, usually one-
of-a-kind 35-mm prints of some of the craziest movies you've never heard of,
as well as all the best and weirdest of the classic Hong Kong action films.
He's a serious archivist, refreshingly free of irony—you don't go to Grind-
house screenings to feel all smarty-pants-cooler-than-the-movie; you go be-
cause the movies are sincerely awesome. (If you're familiar with the work of
the Alamo Drafthouse, the Grindhouse Film Fest is along those same lines;
Halsted and the Alamo guys are pals.) Halsted has recently become something
of a celluloid-treasure hunter, traveling far and wide in search of lost and neg-
lected movies—a few years ago he found a huge stash of vintage kung fu
films stored beneath an old theater in Vancouver, BC, that had been closed
since 1985.
Halsted screens something under the Grindhouse brand about once a week,
and it's always worth checking out, though some of these lost treasures are
better than others. ( Five Element Ninjas: YES. Miami Connection ? Well …
yes, too, but maybe not for everybody.) He also does an annual (or there-
abouts) evening of movie trailers from the 1970s and '80s that is surprisingly
entertaining and wildly popular.
