counter and a basic menu and little gold placards reserving some of the
seats for regulars. Hours can be eccentric, but if it's open and you're
hungry, stop in.
If you're walking on a Saturday, take a right at NE Hancock St. and
browse the busy Hollywood Farmers Market (May-October), in the
parking lot between NE 44th and 45th Aves. It's one of the bigger and
more established markets in Portland.
Backtrack north (left) on NE 45th Ave. to return to Sandy. Continue
right and up the hill, keeping an eye out for evidence of Portland's act-
ive medical-marijuana program among the various storefronts. Don't
neglect a stop at Second Glance Books, a small independent bookshop
with a selection that consists mostly of used paperbacks.
Nearing the top of the hill is Laurelwood Public House, a great brewery
with awesome beer that serves as a gathering spot for parents—it's
known for being kid-friendly. If you don't happen to be kid-friendly
yourself, a tiny balcony upstairs enables you to hide out with your pint
and leave the Tater Tot set behind.
From here you can choose to link with Walk 20: Upper Sandy or catch
Bus 12 toward downtown, which stops at 42nd and Sandy, about a
block from the bus/Light Rail station where the walk started.
