In-Depth Information
as, for example, the rainwater garden in the southwest corner of the center.
The rainwater garden collects water from the roof of the building, then chan-
nels it along an artificial stream made to look like a real one, with native
plants along its edges. Terraced pools slow down the water and filter out sedi-
ment; this system of treating the runoff saves the convention center around
$15,000 a year, according to its website, and it reduces landscaping costs as
well.
Public art in the building includes the world's largest bronze Foucault pendu-
lum, weighing in at 900 pounds and 36 inches across; a 40-foot-long red
dragon boat built in Taiwan, commemorating the dragon boat races held each
year during Portland's Rose Festival; and the giant hanging sculpture Gingko-
berry Gwa by New York City artist Ming Fay, with its enormous red-glass
blossoms and gnarled roots.
