an afterward that he thought the opposition was “generational.”) That
vote meant that the pub would be allowed to serve beer and wine but
not be granted a full liquor license. But a “good-neighbor agreement” in
the wake of the vote helped the two parties iron out their differences,
and the pub opened with a full license and a lot of vocal support from
neighbors.
Continue along NE 16th Ave. to NE Knott St., and turn right. From
Knott, take a right on NE 20th Ave. At NE Thompson St. turn left and
continue several blocks, then turn right at NE 28th Ave.
At the corner of NE 28th Ave. and U. S. Grant Pl. is an adorable cottage
that stands out even in a neighborhood full of pretty houses. Note the
extra-cool spiderweb window glass.
Keep walking down NE 28th Ave. another block, then turn right onto
NE Tillamook St. Go left at NE 27th Ave., then right onto NE Hancock
St. for a block, then left onto NE 26th Ave., then right into the Hancock
St.-Broadway Alley. Portland has a number of these unmaintained al-
leyways; they're public rights-of-way and open to (slow-moving) traffic,
though often unpaved and challenging for cars. Mostly they're a fun
way to see a neighborhood from a new angle: namely, the back door.
Exiting the alley, take a right onto NE 25th Ave., then a left on NE Han-
cock St. At the corner of Hancock and NE 22nd Ave. is Portland's
White House, a very sweet bed-and-breakfast in a historic, gorgeously
renovated Victorian home.
Turn left on NE 22nd, then right on NE Broadway, the neighborhood's
main drag. You'll find any number of eating and drinking options along
this stretch. Just before NE 17th Ave. is the excellent Broadway Books,
an independent bookstore that holds frequent events and author ap-
pearances. The store is a particularly active supporter of regional au-
thors, such as Chelsea Cain ( Heartsick ), Cheryl Strayed ( Wild ), and
Storm Large ( Crazy Enough ). The staff is known for above-and-beyond
customer service and maintains a fun blog, too ( broadway-
books.blogspot.com ).
Follow NE Broadway to NE 15th Ave., passing the route's starting
point, crossing 15th and turning left. Turn right at NE Halsey (by the
Applebee's, a harbinger if ever there was one), then left down the un-
lovely concrete path through the Lloyd Center mall parking lot.
