one of Portland's coffee labs: Heart Roasters, an industrial-chic
hangout that opened in 2009 as part of the wave of post-Stumptown ser-
iousness regarding the art and science of caffeination.
Continue up E. Burnside St. to NE 28th Ave., home of the excellent
Laurelhurst Theater. The Art Deco theater opened in 1923 as a single-
screen movie house but now has several auditoriums and serves micro-
brews, wine, and pizza. It shows a handful of second-run films plus
(usually) a classic or two selected by theme.
Turn right on SE 28th Ave., then left on SE Ankeny St. Follow Ankeny
past SE 33rd Ave. (where you exited the park earlier); glance to your
right as you pass two old-Portland mansions looming on their small hill-
side. Stay on SE Ankeny St. until you reach the park entrance, just be-
fore SE Laurelhurst Pl., then take a right into the park. Follow the main
path back through Laurelhurst Park to the starting point.
