Kobarid(KOH-bah-reed)feelsolder,andthereforeabitmoreappealing,thanitsbigbrother
Bovec. This humble settlement was immortalized by a literary giant, Ernest Hemingway,
who drove an ambulance in these mountains during World War I. He described Kobarid as
“a little white town with a campanile in a valley. It was a clean little town and there was a
finefountaininthesquare.”Soundsaboutright.EventhoughKobaridlovestotoutitsHem-
ingway connection, historians believe that Papa did not actually visit Kobarid until he came
back after the war to research his book.
