About five miles beyond Trenta, in the town of So č a, is the Church of St. Joseph (with
redoniondome,tuckedbehindthebigtreeontheright).Stepinsidetoseesomefascinating
art. During World War II, an artist hiding out in the mountains filled this church with patri-
otic symbolism. The interior is bathed in Yugoslav red, white, and blue—a brave statement
madewhensuchnationalisticsentimentsweredangerous.OntheceilingisSt.Michael(clad
inYugoslavcolors)withYugoslavia'sthreeWWIIenemiesathisfeet:theeagle(Germany),
the wolf (Italy), and the serpent (Japan). The tops of the walls along the nave are lined with
saints, but these are Slavic, not Catholic. Finally, look carefully at the Stations of the Cross
andfindthefacesofhatedYugoslavenemies:alederhosen-cladHitler(pullingaropetoup-
