Slovenia Almanac
Official Name: Republika Slovenija, or simply Slovenija.
Snapshot History: After being dominated by Germans for centuries, Slovenian cul-
ture proudly emerged in the 19th century. In the aftermath of World War I, Slovenia
merged with its neighbors to become Yugoslavia, then broke away and achieved in-
dependence for the first time in 1991.
Population: Slovenia's two million people (a count similar to Nevada's) are 83 per-
cent ethnic Slovenes who speak Slovene, plus a smattering of Serbs, Croats, and
Muslim Bosniaks. Almost 60 percent of the country is Catholic.
Latitude and Longitude: 46° N and 14° E (latitude similar to Lyon, France;
Montreal, Canada; or Bismarck, North Dakota).
