Towns with mixed populations are either effectively divided in half, or have buildings
clearly marked with symbols indicating the ethnicity of the occupant. Small-town school-
houses often operate “two schools under one roof,” with separate entrances and staggered
shifts for the Bosniak and Croat kids...who, virtually from birth, are constantly told they are
very different from each other. In some towns, a beautifully restored Orthodox church may
sit across from the battered footprint of a long-gone mosque (or vice versa).
