stone cliffs rise from the deep and islands are scattered just offshore (the most appealing
are Hvar and Kor č ula). Here you'll find Croatia's top tourist town, Dubrovnik, and the big
city of Split, with its impressive Roman ruins. Way up in the northern corner of the country
is the wedge-shaped peninsula called Istria, which has less dramatic scenery but arguably
even more romantic towns—including my favorite, the Venetian-flavored Rovinj—along
with the city of Pula (more great Roman ruins) and a hilly interior blanketed with vineyards
and topped with hill towns (Motovun is the best). Wedged between Dalmatia and Istria is
theKvarnerGulf,awindy,aridno-man's-landthathasfewworthwhileattractions,butafew
fine islands offshore.
