Notice how the Orthodox crosses on the steeples of St. Nicholas' Church differ from the
cross seen in Roman Catholic churches (known as a Latin cross). In addition to the stand-
ard crossbar, Orthodox crosses often also have a second, smaller crossbar near the top (rep-
resenting the I.N.R.I. plaque that was displayed above Jesus' head). Sometimes Orthodox
crosses also feature a third, angled crossbar at the bottom. Many believe that rather than
being nailed directly to the cross, Jesus' feet were nailed to a crossbar like this one to pro-
long his suffering. The slanted angle represents Jesus' forgiveness of the thief crucified to
his right (the side that's pointing up)...and suggests where the unrepentant thief on his left
ended up.
