Visiting the Cathedral: Takeinthecathedral's exterior. Theearliest,Romanesqueparts
of this church, dating from the mid-12th century, are made of limestone from the Croatian
island of Kor č ula. But the church has been rebuilt after four different earthquakes—most
extensively after the 1667 quake, when it achieved its current Renaissance-Baroque blend.
That earthquake, which also contributed to Dubrovnik's current appearance, destroyed
three-quartersofKotor'sbuildings.Afiresweptthecity,andallofthedeadbodiesattracted
rats (and with them, the plague)—a particularly dark chapter in Kotor's history.
Why are the two towers different? There are plenty of legends, but the most likely is
that restorers working after 1667 simply ran out of money before they finished the second
