In-Depth Information
Goinside (free, treasury-€1, sporadic hours,generally April-Nov daily 9:00-18:00, July-
Aug until 19:00, closed during Mass, closed Dec-March except by request—ask locals
around the church if someone can let you in). Beyond the small sanctuary, you'll find a
treasury with relics and icons. Look for the priceless crucifix from the school of the 18th-
century Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (#1,inthe display case inthe center ofthe
room), with Jesus on one side, and Mary and the saints on the other. Beyond the treasury is
what was to be the main apse (altar area) of the unfinished massive church (notice it's at a
right angle to the actual, in-use altar of the existing smaller church). The rough, unadorned
brick walls make it clear that they didn't get very far. Check out the model of the ambitious
but never-built church. The Baroque main altar is by Bernini's student Francesco Cabianca,
who lived in this area and was always trying to earn money to pay off his gambling debts.
The small room at the end displays old vestments.
