In-Depth Information
Montenegrin destinations explained in this chapter—consider hiring a local guide; I
recommend Stefan Đ ukanovi ć , listed on here .
Sail-in and Sail-away: Cruisers visiting Kotor are treated to a spectacular sail-in
andsail-away,throughthefjordlikebayandthenarrowVerigeStrait.Iftheweather's
good and you enjoy dramatic scenery, this is not a day to sleep in or nap during the
sail-away.
Soonafter the turn-offforthe Bosnian border, onthe right, you'll pass Kupari, with one
of the few buildings that's still damaged from the wars of the 1990s. Originally Tito's villa,
the building later became a vacation home for Yugoslav military officers. Now it's a ruin,
awaiting investors.
From Kupari, you'll curl around the picturesque Bay of Cavtat, where some of the
world's richest people tie up their yachts. Partway along the bay, after the village of Plat,
you'll pass (on the left) an electrical plant, which harnesses the power of an underground
river to generate more than enough clean energy for the entire city.
After the pleasant resort town of Cavtat (described on here ) , then the airport, you have
theoptionofturningoff(ontheright,toward Molnat )totakeadvantage ofthelesscrowded
border crossing at Konfin (described next). Otherwise, just cruise along the main road until
you reach the primary Debeli Brijeg border crossing. (If there's a line-up when you arrive,
it's easy to backtrack to the alternate crossing: Just after the town of Gruda, follow signs for
Plo č ice, then Vitaljina, then Herceg Novi , joining up with the route described next.)
Optional Konin Border Detour
Ifyoususpectthattherewillbelonglinesattheprimarybordercrossing,considerthisscen-

scape of pointy cypresses, vineyards, olive groves, and fig trees. Just before the village of
Radov č i ć i, on the right, watch for Kojan Koral, a horse farm that hosts “celebrity” equines
when they come here to perform in the HBO show Game of Thrones (which is filmed loc-
ally). They offer horseback rides and ATV safaris ( www.kojankoral.hr ) .
Farther along, you'll enjoy fine views (on the right) down on the dramatic, elongated
peninsula of Molunat. Notice that the H-shaped peninsula forms two protected bays. The
larger one, facing north (toward Dubrovnik), is used to harbor ships in winter, while the
smaller, south-facing one is better in summer.
